JP Du Preez Interview

JP Du Preez has been with KFD for a year and a half now and is quickly becoming one of South Africa’s best Skateboarders. After a recent injury we where able to get him off a board long enough it ask some question about the industry, the music and the new KFD video!

Skating has become big business, what are your feelings on the commercial aspects of skating? To me skateboarding is all about having fun with my homies, but to others it’s also a job. I think that companies do so much for skateboarding. Its amazing, especially skater owned companies. And what better than getting paid for doing something that you love.

What do you think of reality shows based on skateboarders? I think it’s okay because it introduces skateboarding to the rest of the world, brings it to new markets. I do think they over do it sometimes, Ryan Shecklers show is all about his love life and bling. Not enough skating!

You study photography, what do you take pictures of, what is the inspiration for your photography? Because I’m studying photography I have to take pictures of tons of random things. I don’t really have much of a choice; I just have to do what needs to be done. Recently I injured my ankle and have been unable to skate. Being injured has given me the opportunity to start shooting skate pics. I’d still rather be skating though. Personally, aside from skateboarding, I also love taking pictures of the city, and music!

Who inspires your photography? Well Marcus Maschwitz has to be one of my biggest influences in photography. He is one of the reasons why I started and just a rad guy. Thanks brother! I also look at photographers like Atiba Jefferson, Gavin Scott, Jason Odell, Tyrone Bradley Warren v. Rensburg, Ben Burgh!

Music has always been closely associated with skating, which skate video has the best soundtrack? Zero – New Blood and Flip Sorry and Really Sorry. They have Iggy Pop, Motorhead, David Bowie Velvet Underground, Minor Threat, The Coral, The Stooges and Gray Matter. Basically they are both old school and they both rock!

You guys just finished filming the new KFD video. What are your favorite tricks? I think it’s almost finished, I think its some final edits and its done… ask Jamie, it should be released in September. . And my favorite trick, well they are all gnarly, you will have to watch and decided! Mosie has got some amazing footage though. The video is defiantly going to throw everything down.
